Rhododendron

rhododendron

In the churchyard near our house.

*Thanks to Graybo for correcting my earlier misidentification of this plant as an azalea.*

It’s a Rhododendron.
Of course, Azaleas are Rhododendrons too, but they are a particular subset (actually several subsets) within the genus.
They are sorely under-rated for scent, IMO, particularly some of the smaller flowered types. Tom’s childminder’s garden is full of them at the moment and the scent is quite heady. Of course, they are dull and boring for the rest of the year, but they are quite a spectacle now. Head down the road from you to Englefield Green and visit the Savill Garden and Valley Gardens in Windsor Great Park to see these things in all their diversity.

I knew you wouldn’t let me down, Graybo. Corrections have been made, and now your comment seems like some kind of insane non-sequitur! Haha!
